I went to Loreto High School polling station on Nell Lane at around 7:30pm.. queued for only 15-20 mins and managed to vote ok. Never seen a queue there before, are you sure it’s the Barlow Moor station? Wonder if it’s affected any others like Oswald Rd school.. hmmm.

Personally I have no problems being stopped and/or searched. It is more about how you are spoken to.

I would rather Police were able to stop and search prople than pick up the pieces of them following an act of terrorism. It is unfortunate that we live in a world where this is an issue, but due to a minority of people we have to adapt.
The people that complain about being stopped and searched are more than likely the same that would complain if a bomb was to go off and KILL someone they know, probably sreaming ‘Police did not do enough to protect us!’

We need to decide whether we want to be protected or accept that if it happens it happens.

From my experiences with the Police I am aware that they have a very hard and dangerous job, and if I could assist them in making England a safer place to live, I would.

I will stop rambling now and leave you all in peace, but I do think some of you need to think before you type.

Gez, that is priceless. I just had a similar situation where some tenants – 3 young guys – trashed a property of mine – around $7000 of damage in 90 days. I found two of them on facebook immediately. Rather than engage in an online war, I just passed the details onto the authorities and to the insurance company….

Brilliant stuff. I've recently been through and culled 2/3rds of my Facebook friends because - as one friend said - everyone needs somewhere they can tell fart jokes. A v. smart colleague of mine, Chris Nee, wrote an article on The Presentation of Self In Social Media in which he discusses the way in which our public life in social media is making us more self-conscious about how we present ourselves and our relationships with others. Clearly, this isn't the case here.

I’ve heard Joel speak and he offers a lot more value than talking about business cards. He is about marketing yourself so as to create value.
I have seen results from just a few of his techniques and believe the reason you can’t find much on him is because he is at the end of his career and is looking to spend more time with family. A quick bio: he worked on cruise ships in his younger years as a magician before moving onto being a sales guy for trade-show type events. He’s learnt a lot about marketing and the power of influence and in my opinion he’s created an enormous amount of media for himself by placing his business card video online. Even if only 1% of people think to investigate Joel’s legitimacy further and attend one of his final events then this will surely be successful marketing.

Without sounding too patronising: well done, Gez, for following this up with the officer and also publicising your rights under section 44. I blogged about Section 44 myself a while back after I spotted the police stopping and searching folk at my local station (not too far from Clapham Junction, as it happens). http://engineroomblog.blogspot.com/2008/07/section-44-of-terrorism-act-2000.html#comments Since then I've seen them do it a few more times, each time with a large number of officers (eight to twelve: rather excessive for a commuter station) and each time stopping and searching a high proportion of teenage girls. Seriously! My personal feeling is that in my area at least, the police are looking for knives (or are trying to be seen to be tackling knife crime, which is rather different). Either way, that's still an abuse of power.

For the last 5 years or so, essentially the whole of London has been a temporary “designated zone” for searches, renewed every 28 days.

Actually, Dave. I think that’s a much better approach than stopping people randomly in the street. The teachers know these kids and by identifying those who are vulnerable to radicalisation and working with them, especially in conjunction with the moderate Islamic community, they can tackle home-grown terrorism at the root.

I see what you are saying about the selection procedure though…

Thanks. As it happens, after I objected to being stopped they didn’t even search me. All they did was take my details. What I didn’t realise at the time is that under section 44 stop and search is the only power they have.

You DO NOT have to give your details or explain your presence. Of course most people, including me, just hand over ID when asked by a policeman.

I suppose I could take the view that I was in an area near a train station and in this day and age it pays to be vigilent etc. However in many cases, these powers are used as a flimsy excuse to harass and get information on protesters and members of the press.

Frankly, GEZD, you look suspicious and the police were right in stopping you…..

Here in Western Australia we have just seen a terrible scenario where someone has headbutted a police officer, the act was videoed by someone with a phone – and the guy got off scott free. The poor police officer has lost partial use of his arm for life.

So, on one hand I really want to remove any blockages to genuine police officers getting on with their job, and the legal system being able to appropriately deal with people that should be dealt with. The above scenario is a completely stupid waste of resources.

The only reasons I can think it might be requested is where the police want to create a clear message that suspicious people will be questioned, therefore the community is safer. Or there is some politician in the background wanting to quote a big statistic in parliament.

There are always the few power hungry people that will abuse power. It is up to the leadership within the Police to set the tone and see it is carried out. A lot like a successful business really….

No need for the “I told you so”, Dan. I’m not necessarily saying the police shouldn’t have these rights, but they should be put to better use. Counting the number of section 44 slips a police force has issued is not a good KPI.
